The second generation of Continuous Toner Supply System (CTSS) printers focused on sustainability and an improved toner refill experience. The redesigned toner reload kits have achieved over a 75% reduction in plastic usage compared to previous versions, making them more eco-friendly and cost-effective.
My role
As Design Lead, I led the development of the CTSS 2.0 series, focusing on sustainability, usability, and a seamless refill experience, significantly improving upon the CTSS 1.0 toner reload system. The project introduced an updated, mess-free toner reload system that reduces plastic waste by over 75% compared to previous versions, while maintaining a refill time of under 15 seconds. The printers incorporate over 25% recycled plastic by weight, and the toner reload kits use 75% recycled plastic, contributing to HP’s broader sustainability goals.
CTSS 2.0 launched in three distinct SKUs.

The toner reloading interface is accessed by lifting the paper output tray. The CTSS 2.0 interface offers a secure fit, boosting user confidence during reloading. Compared to the first generation, the process is simpler and more intuitive.
